“Thank you so much for your gift of the grant. I decided when I arrived in Paris for 2 months, that I would buy museum tickets to the many museums, and a year membership to the Louvre (which allowed me to walk in with no lines at all, and go many times, finding obscure rooms where I would be alone to contemplate amazing pieces of art. And it’s air-conditioned!) I visited Sennelier, many times, and bought beautiful watercolor pots of paint from Japan. Outdoor food markets, medieval tapestry factory, churches, department stores, the Seine - all of this made Paris feel like a giant museum to me. I had an Open Studio evening, where the doors of the Citè are open to the public and the other 300 artist residents, to visit our living spaces/studios. That was nerve wracking and exhilarating.” Janet Scagnelli

 A Residency That Changed My Artistic Practice

This spring, I had the extraordinary opportunity to spend 28 days as an artist in residence at Art145 in Superior, Arizona, from March 9 through April 6, 2026. The experience was made possible through a generous grant from the International Artists Association, and I could not be more grateful for their support.

In fact, IAA did more than provide the funding. They helped me discover the Art145 residency program in the first place, connecting me with an opportunity that ultimately became a career altering experience.

During my time in Superior, I was able to devote myself almost completely to my artwork, something I had never previously given myself the opportunity to do. I worked every day in the studio, taught several classes in the community, got to know the wonderful people of Superior, and shared ideas and experiences with the remarkable artists living and working there.

The result was 20 completed paintings, which now form the newest installment of my Panca Marga legacy series and are currently on view in my solo exhibition at Silver Street Studios in Houston throughout September.

More importantly, however, I returned home with something that cannot be measured in paintings: a renewed commitment to my life and career as an artist. Having the time and space to focus so completely on my creative practice reminded me just how much I love this part of myself.

I am deeply thankful to the International Association of Arts USA (IAA-USA) for believing in my work and investing in my artistic journey. Their generosity gave me far more than the opportunity to participate in a residency. It gave me the time, space, encouragement, and inspiration to reconnect with the artist I want to be.
