Coinciding with World Art Day on Sunday, April 15th, Blue Roof Studios is offering a FREE Family Art Workshop for all ages. No prior art-making experience is necessary! All materials will be provided, as well as snacks. Please note that all children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
Blue Roof Studios is a new multidisciplinary art hub located in the Florence neighborhood of South Los Angeles. It offers a place for artists to work in an environment that fosters creativity and community, while seeking to expand and develop artistic opportunities with and for L.A.-based creative practitioners. BRF is committed to supporting community initiatives and cultivating an environment of reflective and meaningful dialogue around issues of access, diversity and artists' roles within the broader ecology of our city through both public and private events.
In January, Blue Roof Studios launched a series of art workshops in collaboration with Barnsdall Arts. Each month, a Barnsdall teaching artist comes to BRS and leads a workshop on art making that can be done by people of all ages. This originally began as a request from the neighborhood kids who, after experiencing a free art workshop during an open studios event at BRS, wanted more. South Los Angeles, although rich in cultural history and production, has lacked the resources to cultivate artistic expression and learning in schools. As good neighbors wanting to engage with the neighborhood in respectful and artistic fashion, BRS set up the monthly series of art workshops to be a space for the community to gather and create art. These workshops are steadily grounded in the Blue Roof Studios Project Room and completely free to the public.
So far, children varying in ages from 3-15 years old have attended the workshops, although ideally, these workshops are inter-generational, bridging gaps between age, culture, ethnicity, and ideologies. BRS's April workshop is dedicated to World Art Day and takes place on April 15, from 12-2pm.
Additional workshop dates:
May 13 - Mother's Day
June 10 - Family Totem Pole
